How Fuzzy Query Works (part 4) Using fuzzy logic, we
could define the idea of "good grades" in terms of a fuzzy set. The following image is a
screenshot from the beta version of Sonalysts Inc. Fuzzy Query application. Here the idea of "good
grades" is defined as a classical S shaped curve ranging from 3.0 to 4.0. From looking at
the chart of the S curve, you can see that a student with a 4.0 GPA would have a membership
of 1.0, which is to say that they would have complete membership in the set of students
with good grades. Further you can see that a student with a 3.5 GPA would have a
membership of 0.5 or 50% membership in the set of students with good grades. Thus, the
concept of "good grades" becomes a continuous function rather than an either/or proposition.
This is more in line with the way people think.
